Galano News Volume 27 - No. 9
November/December 2011
Step 10: Continued
to take personal inventory, and when we were wrong promptly admitted it. "A continuous look at
our assets and liabilities, and a real desire to learn and grown by this means, are necessities for us." Step
11: Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as
we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
"We know that God watches lovingly over us. We know that when we turn to him, all will be
well for us, here and hereafter." Step 12: Having
had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these
principles in all of our affairs. www.aa.org/twelveandtwelve

Galano Club Philosophy The
Galano Club provides a safe place where LGBTQ people can participate in 12-Step recovery programs, attend meetings, and socialize
with each other. Its survival depends upon active members and volunteer work. We, as individuals, foster our own recovery
through associating with other people at the Club who are in 12-Step programs. We keep what we give away. We need
the Club. The Club needs us. Contribute. Benefit. We are the Club. |
Need some support on getting through the Holidays? Check
out the Galano Club's enhanced library! Our selection of recovery books, magazines, cd's and dvd's is outstanding!
| AN ONLINE INTERVIEW WITH RAYMOND K.-K. When did you first arrive to the Galano Club? Geeze, I arrived
first. However it seems like just a few years ago... There was a wonderful fellow from the 94 (Gay AA) groups,
Bernie S. who had the foresight to encourage socializing for us outside of the bars. There was a Thursday 94 group AA
meeting at Summerfield Methodist Church and he arranged to rent the space after the meeting to offer a time to play games,
have coffee and a snack and be social. The Galano club evolved from this social night to the club it has been today. How
has the club changed since then? Well, we moved from the church social to our own
club on Farwell near Ogden and then onto another location at Farwell near North and ultimately to our current location.
We're talking about a 25 year span here. Over the years, our membership grew quite a bit then dwindled although
we are seeing an upsurge as of late. We haven't lost our focus of being a safe place for LGBT recovering people
to have a place to socialize and to offer space to 12 step groups to meet. How
have you grown or evolved over the time you've been sober? Oh my, there isn't enough space in this article
for all of that. I was a daily black-out drinker and could not stop. So it was miraculous that I could get two
days in a row without drinking. Even though it has been over 26 years in the program, I am still most amazed that I
didn't drink yesterday and so far didn't drink today-getting me two days in a row without a drink. This amazes me because
I remember that I am a daily black-out drinker. I think taking my first sponsor's recommendation, "To not close
the door to the past nor live in it; to just keep the door open a little as to not forget what it was like"-has helped
me avoid picking up the misery of a drink. However the growing and evolving stuff is all part of working the steps,
coming to meetings and remembering to keep sobriety first, no matter what. What's it
like to be Chair of the Social Committee and what do you do, exactly? I like to think of myself as
a helluva party planner and I LOVE a good time! I have really had the Social Committee and being on the Galano Club
Board is new for me and therefore I am learning by trial and error. My partner Greg has and is always a good sounding
board for me. And especially, I really am working closely with the rest of the board who are beyond terrific-they are
truly professional and we use the program as a guide to help us function. We have fun. |
